This week the seasons change as summer gives way to autumn. Cooler temperatures, fall colors, and a variety of activities mark the season we’re anticipating. We hear God’s word tell us that some events occur at certain moments in our lives. “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:” (Ecclesiastes 3:1) Joyce Meyers once observed, “We must remember there are different seasons in our lives and let God do what He wants to do in each of those seasons.” God is in control of time, and He has a plan for our lives.
The Apostle Paul recognized God’s timing with respect to his role in the salvation of others. He wrote to Titus, “…and at his appointed season he brought his word to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior.” (Titus 1:3)
God had an appointed time to call the Apostle to service. Because of his obedience people came to faith in response to Paul’s message from the Lord. God’s message brought about healing, deliverance from evil forces, and most importantly the gift of eternal life. At the very moment people opened their hearts to Jesus, their lives were instantly changed forever.
We who have received this amazing gift may participate in sharing God’s hope with others. As Billy Graham once said, “All around you are people whose lives are filled with trouble and sorrow, and they need your compassion and encouragement.” We need to share God’s word with others. It may be a word of hope, a scriptural promise that encourages, or the very gospel message that enables someone to receive the gift of eternal life. When it comes to sharing God’s word, we need not worry if it’s summer or fall. God’s word is not limited by time.
“Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction.” (II Timothy 4:2) The season for God’s Word is year-round. Though external forces and circumstances may intimidate us, we must never doubt that God has truth for us to share with all people at all times. One of the most important truths we’ll share with others is when God promises, “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5) He does not travel with us for a temporary period – God is our constant friend, and the source of all of our needs. He is with us always.
Unlike specific sports, a particular wardrobe, or annual holidays, the truths of scripture are not limited by the season of the year. Time on earth is finite so God encourages us to make good use of the time we have. “Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity….” (Eph. 5:15-16) Whatever season we’re in is God’s season.
